Bexar County covers 3,255 square kilometers (1,256 square miles) in south-central Texas and includes San Antonio along with several surrounding communities. The area combines urban life with suburban neighborhoods and rural stretches within the same administrative unit.
Spanish settlers founded the first civil municipality in Texas in 1731 when 55 Canary Islanders established Villa de San Fernando de Béxar. This settlement marked the beginning of permanent European presence in the region.

The name derives from a Spanish noble who died defending Budapest from Ottoman forces in the 17th century. This connection between Texas and European history came through the Duke of Béxar.
