Greater Houston, Metropolitan Statistical Area in Texas, United States.
Greater Houston spreads across nine counties in Southeast Texas, forming a large urban region with the city of Houston at its center. The area includes residential and commercial districts, industrial zones, green spaces, and suburbs linked by roads and transit routes.
After World War II the region grew rapidly through the oil industry and government investment in aerospace projects. Since then, more companies and residents have settled here, turning the region into a major economic center.
In its neighborhoods you hear dozens of languages and see grocery stores, restaurants, and places of worship reflecting traditions from Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Theaters, concert halls, and galleries draw visitors downtown, where evening performances often welcome large and varied audiences.
Visitors reach the region through three airports, and a network of highways links the different counties. Local buses and trains serve main routes, though having your own vehicle often makes getting around easier.
The port lies about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the coast yet remains accessible through an artificial canal. This waterway makes the region one of the busiest trade hubs in North America.
