Lewis Smith Lake, Reservoir in northern Alabama, United States.
Lewis Smith Lake is a reservoir in three counties in northern Alabama, covering roughly 8,500 hectares with more than 800 kilometers of natural shoreline. The three arms of the water body extend through Cullman, Walker, and Winston Counties.
Construction of Lewis Smith Dam began in November 1957 and created this body of water on the Sipsey Fork until work finished in September 1961. The dam has supplied surrounding communities with electricity and water ever since.
Fishing enthusiasts gather year-round for competitions targeting largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish. Local boaters explore the branching shoreline regularly on weekends.
Public access points, campgrounds, and marinas are spread across all three counties and offer entry options for visitors. Water temperatures remain cool and comfortable in summer because of the depth of the reservoir.
At 80 meters (264 feet) deep, this body of water is the deepest lake in Alabama and has a pronounced three-fingered shape. The clear waters allow divers to explore submerged logs and rock formations.
