National University of San Marcos, Public research university in Lima, Peru.

The National University of San Marcos is a public research institution in Lima with sites across several neighborhoods. The institution divides into 20 faculties where around 37,000 students enroll in undergraduate and graduate programs.

King Charles V of Spain established the institution in 1551, making it the first officially recognized university on the American continent. The site evolved over centuries from a small Dominican college to a network of modern campuses.

The name comes from the Evangelist Mark and links the foundation to a Catholic tradition. The main campus entrance shows classical republican buildings with inner courtyards where students gather under arcades.

The main campus sits about 30 minutes from Jorge Chavez International Airport, reached mostly by public buses or shared taxis. Most buildings open during daytime hours, and registration may be needed for certain areas.

Mario Vargas Llosa, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, studied literature and law here during the 1950s. A total of 21 presidents of Peru since independence completed their education at this institution.
