Waterfall Valley Hut, Mountain hut in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania.
Waterfall Valley Hut is a mountain refuge in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park designed to sleep around 34 hikers across multiple sleeping areas. A shared common room with tables and benches serves as a gathering and dining space for guests.
The building was completed in 2020 and demonstrates modern sustainable construction techniques with materials transported by helicopter to this remote alpine setting. It represents a contemporary addition to the infrastructure serving the protected wilderness area.
The structure incorporates interpretative artwork by Fiona Rice, connecting visitors to the natural environment of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The facility is equipped with waterless toilets, rainwater collection, and gas heating, along with designated camping areas for independent hikers and guided groups. All systems are designed to function in the harsh conditions of this alpine environment.
The building employs triple-glazed windows and superior insulation with R8 ratings for roofs and R6 for walls and floors. These features maintain warmth even during the harshest mountain weather.
