Bay of Plenty Region

The Bay of Plenty region extends 260 kilometers along the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island, from the Coromandel Peninsula to Cape Runaway.

James Cook named this area in 1769 after observing the generous food supplies available at multiple Māori villages along the coastline.

The region holds eight principal rivers and contains numerous Māori settlements, with the traditional name Te Moana-a-Toi reflecting its deep indigenous heritage.

The area maintains a temperate maritime climate with warm summers and mild winters, supporting extensive agricultural activities including kiwifruit and avocado production.

Whakaari, New Zealand's most active cone volcano, sits within the bay and has recorded continuous volcanic activity for over 150,000 years.
