Revillagigedo Islands

Revillagigedo encompasses Socorro, San Benedicto, Roca Partida, and Clarión, four landmasses of volcanic origin set far out in the open ocean. The islands rise steeply from the water, with rugged cliffs and virtually no sandy beaches.

Colima took over administration in the 19th century, initially with intentions to establish a penal colony there. Those plans were later abandoned and the islands remained largely deserted.

The archipelago carries the name of a Spanish noble family and remains for most Mexicans a distant symbol of the vastness of the Pacific. Every scientific visit requires official permission, so the territory stays practically uninhabited.

Access is limited to specialized dive liveaboards that take several days and are open only to trained divers. Anyone considering such a trip should prepare for rough seas and variable weather.

Dive boats visit especially Roca Partida, a tiny rock barely emerging from the waves that divers consider a meeting point for large fish. The currents around this spot can be very strong and attract experienced underwater photographers.
