Hillcrest Country Club, Private country club in Cheviot Hills, Los Angeles, US
The Hillcrest Country Club is a private membership club with a golf course in Cheviot Hills, a quiet neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles. The property includes a clubhouse with dining rooms, manicured green spaces, and tennis courts arranged around the 18 holes.
Samuel Newmark, Louis Issacs, Karl Triest, and Joseph Y. Baruh founded the club in 1920 as the first membership club for the Jewish community in Los Angeles. Willie Watson designed the golf course, which rolls across gentle hills and still largely follows the original layout today.
During the 1930s to 1960s, well-known film comedians met every Friday at a regular table in the dining room. They tested their jokes there and swapped stories about their work in the studios before performing in public.
The grounds are only accessible to members, and visitors can view the facility from the public roads around Cheviot Hills. The complex sits west of downtown, with the clubhouse surrounded by trees and gently rolling lawns.
In the 1950s, oil deposits were discovered on the club grounds, which led to the creation of a special membership category. These shares provide tax-free dividends and are passed within families from one generation to the next.
