Galiuro Wilderness, Wilderness area in southern Arizona, United States.
Galiuro Wilderness is a protected natural area in the Galiuro Mountains of southern Arizona with dramatic cliff faces and distinctive reddish rock formations. The landscape rises steeply across open ridges and deep canyons in this remote mountain region.
The area received initial protection in 1932 and became a designated wilderness through federal law in 1964. This status secured the landscape against development and preserved it for future generations.
The Power family settlement of 1909 and subsequent 1918 confrontation with law enforcement over draft evasion shaped the territorial identity of this land.
Trails here are minimally maintained with few markers, so bringing detailed maps and navigation tools is essential. Visitors should prepare for rough terrain and remote conditions where assistance is far away.
Within the mountains lies the wreckage of a World War II bomber that crashed in January 1943, killing its entire crew. A memorial plaque at the site honors the eleven service members who perished in this tragedy.
