The Hindu Temple of Florida is a house of worship in Tampa, featuring a large prayer hall and an ornate gateway tower built in South Indian style. The building was constructed by hand by craftspeople from India using traditional techniques and detailed stonework throughout.
The temple was founded in 1983 by members of the local Hindu community who wanted a shared place to worship. Construction began in 1994 and took several years to complete, as each section of the building was finished carefully and in stages.
The temple holds major festivals throughout the year, such as Shivaratri, Ganesha Chaturthi, and Deepavali, drawing worshippers from across the region. During these occasions, visitors can watch traditional rituals and taste vegetarian food prepared in the temple kitchen.
The temple sits north of Tampa's airport and is easiest to reach by car. It welcomes visitors of all backgrounds, and removing shoes before entering the prayer areas is expected.
The gateway tower was designed and overseen by Muthiah Sthapathi, a craftsman from South India who worked according to ancient building texts. Towers of this type, known in India as gopurams, are found in only a handful of Hindu temples across North America.
