Laura Street Trio, Historic architectural ensemble in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, US
The Laura Street Trio consists of three adjacent buildings in downtown Jacksonville built between 1902 and 1912: the Florida Life Building, the Bisbee Building, and the Old Florida National Bank. Together they form a distinct corner displaying different architectural styles that reflect various design approaches of the early twentieth century.
After the Great Fire of 1901 destroyed much of the city, these three buildings were constructed and symbolize Jacksonville's rebuilding and economic recovery. They stood at the center of rapid growth the city experienced in the years that followed.
The Bisbee Building introduced steel-reinforced concrete construction and Chicago-style design to the Southeast when it rose in the early 1900s. This approach influenced how the city developed its downtown skyline in the following decades.
The three buildings sit at a prominent corner in downtown and are easily walkable from surrounding streets, offering good vantage points to see the different facades. It is best to walk around the block from different angles to fully appreciate the architectural details and transitions between the structures.
The Florida Life Building was recognized by the American Institute of Architects Florida Chapter and placed on their Florida Architecture: 100 Years list. This honor shows the enduring importance of the building to the region's architectural legacy.
