Tanyard Bottom, Historic residential area near Georgia Tech, Atlanta, US

Tanyard Bottom was a residential settlement located south of Georgia Tech along Techwood Drive, where Centennial Place Apartments stands today. The area contained closely built homes that housed working-class families in a compact neighborhood layout.

In the 1930s the residential area was replaced by the Techwood Homes project, marking America's first public housing initiative. This transformation was part of broader government efforts to create better housing for lower-income residents.

The neighborhood was home to working families who built a functioning community in the area. Their daily lives shaped the social fabric of early Atlanta and showed how ordinary people lived and worked together.

The former site is centrally located between Georgia Tech and downtown Atlanta and can be reached easily on foot or by public transport. The area is now completely built over with modern structures and there are no visible remains of the original settlement.

Tanyard Bottom was one of the first places in America where the government deliberately fought poverty through organized housing projects. This experiment became the blueprint for a national movement that would affect millions of people in the decades to follow.
