Lompoc, Agricultural city in Santa Barbara County, United States.
Lompoc is a city in Santa Barbara County on the California Central Coast, surrounded by vineyards, flower fields, and working farmland. The low buildings of downtown spread between wide streets, while residential neighborhoods and industrial structures alternate in the outer areas.
The area originally carried a name from the Chumash people before Spanish settlers established a ranch in the 18th century. The community officially incorporated as a city in 1888 after farmers and merchants settled there.
Downtown streets carry murals on many buildings, showing scenes from early settler life and local farming traditions. Residents celebrate each year with a festival where flower-decorated floats roll through the streets and music groups perform on public squares.
A cluster of wineries in former warehouses sits on the edge of town and offers the chance to taste wines from the region. Most of these rooms open during the day, and the atmosphere remains simple and relaxed.
The nearby rocket base regularly launches satellites and carrier rockets into space, so residents and visitors occasionally see plumes of smoke on the horizon. These launches have made the region a center for aerospace in California.
