Woolman Semester, Educational campus in Nevada City, California.
The Woolman Semester is an educational campus occupying roughly 236 acres of fields and forest near Grass Valley in the Nevada City area. The site sits along Woolman Lane and integrates natural surroundings with learning spaces.
The site had its origins in the John Woolman School, which operated as a four-year secondary school starting in 1963 and closed in 2001. The Woolman Semester was established to follow this transition and adapted the existing grounds for a different educational model.
The school was rooted in Quaker teaching principles and offered courses in peace studies, environmental science, and non-violent communication. Visitors today can observe how these values shaped how the campus and its programs were designed.
The site is located in a rural area and requires a car to reach, as it sits near Grass Valley. Visitors should know it is a remote location and services are not immediately nearby.
In 2024 the property transferred to CHIRP and returned to the stewardship of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe. This return marked a significant turning point in the site's history.
