Peak 2 Peak Gondola, Aerial lift system in Whistler Blackcomb, Canada
The Peak 2 Peak Gondola is an aerial cable system connecting the summits of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. The cabins travel continuously across the valley without intermediate stops, with some offering glass floor sections for an unobstructed view below.
The system opened in 2008 and was the first of its engineering type to operate in North America. This technology allowed engineers to span the valley between two peaks without central support towers.
The gondola connects two mountain communities: skiers arrive in winter while hikers and nature lovers come in summer. Both groups use the ride to experience the peaks from a perspective few can otherwise reach.
The cabins hold up to 28 passengers each and provide a direct ascent to both summit lodges without transfers. Keep in mind that strong winds can slow the ride, particularly during severe mountain weather.
The design required special engineering calculations for extreme mountain winds and held one of the longest unsupported spans at the time of completion. Visitors often do not realize the structure was specifically engineered to function reliably even in the harshest mountain conditions.
