Shea's Castle, Desert stone castle in Antelope Valley, California.
Shea's Castle is a stone house with multiple turrets built from locally quarried granite in the Antelope Valley area of the Mojave Desert in California. The building sits on a large private property that also has its own airstrip, giving it the feel of a remote desert compound.
Richard Peter Shea, a real estate developer from Los Angeles, had the house built in 1924 in a style inspired by Irish castles, which made it stand out sharply from its desert surroundings. It was built during a period when wealthy city residents began buying up remote land across California to create private retreats.
Near the natural springs on the grounds, there are Native American pictographs that show the land was used long before the house was built. These markings are still visible today and give the visit a layer that goes well beyond the stone walls of the house.
The property is in a remote part of Antelope Valley, far from larger towns, so a personal vehicle is essential to get there. It is worth planning the trip in advance and leaving enough time to look around the grounds once you arrive.
After the Shea family left, cowboy entertainer Roy Rogers used the grounds to train his horse Trigger, who became one of the most famous animal performers in American entertainment history. Most visitors walking the property today have no idea this connection exists.
