Wovoka Wilderness

The Wovoka Wilderness spans 48,000 acres of mountainous terrain, featuring Bald Mountain at 9,544 feet elevation and diverse landscapes of narrow canyons and dry lakebeds.

The United States Congress designated this area as protected wilderness in December 2014 through Public Law 113-291, adding it to the National Wilderness Preservation System.

The wilderness bears the name of a Northern Paiute spiritual leader who initiated the Ghost Dance movement among Native American tribes in the late 1800s.

The area contains no established trails or water sources, requiring visitors to bring sufficient supplies and navigate using topographical maps or GPS devices.

Within the wilderness boundaries, researchers have documented multiple species including golden eagles, bighorn sheep, and various bat populations in their natural habitat.
