El Rancho Hotel and Casino, Hotel and casino on Las Vegas Strip, Nevada
El Rancho Hotel and Casino was a large resort complex on the Las Vegas Strip that housed a casino floor, hundreds of guest rooms, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The property featured an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a bowling alley, and multiple performance spaces arranged across several connected buildings.
The resort opened in 1948 under the name Thunderbird with a Navajo-inspired design concept. It changed ownership several times over the decades and later included a horse racing track called Thunderbird Downs before being renamed El Rancho Hotel and Casino in 1982.
The hotel presented regular performances by musicians and entertainers in its showroom while operating a horse racing track called Thunderbird Downs for sporting events.
The property provided affordable dining and lodging options aimed at local guests rather than high-spending tourists. The layout allowed easy access between the casino, bowling alley, and various restaurants within the complex.
The entire structure was demolished in October 2000 to make way for the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. This demolition was among the first major hotel teardowns on the Strip and signaled a shift in how the area would evolve.
