Great Basin Desert, Desert region in Nevada, Oregon, Utah and California, United States.
The Great Basin Desert spreads across four western states and includes dry plains, mountain ridges, and flat basins between two major ranges. Sagebrush covers much of the land, while grasses and low shrubs grow in the higher zones.
Thousands of years ago, groups settled in this area and developed techniques to survive in the sparse environment. Europeans reached the region in the 19th century while searching for routes to the west.
The name comes from the Great Basin, an area with no outlet to the sea, where water evaporates into salt flats. Visitors today can still see trails and stone circles that groups used across generations.
Temperatures shift sharply between day and night, especially during spring and fall, so visitors should bring layered clothing. Water is not available in many areas, making ample supplies necessary.
This desert receives most of its moisture as snow in winter rather than rain in summer like other deserts. The elevation creates colder conditions than most dry areas on the continent.
