Whitman College, Liberal arts college in Walla Walla, United States.
Whitman College is a liberal arts college in Walla Walla, Washington, spreading across roughly 117 acres at the base of the Blue Mountains. The site includes academic buildings, residence halls, and research facilities.
The institution opened in 1859 as Whitman Seminary and began awarding degrees in 1882. Religious affiliation ended in the early 20th century.
The campus takes its name from Marcus Whitman, a 19th-century missionary who worked in the Pacific Northwest. Today around 1,500 students move between the buildings, and many classes take place in small seminar rooms.
The grounds sit in downtown Walla Walla and are easily reached on foot or by bicycle. The campus is open during daytime hours, though some buildings require permission to enter.
The Semester in the West takes students through multiple western states to investigate ecological questions in the field. Participants live in tents and travel mainly by van through remote regions.
