Soap Lake, Meromictic lake in Grant County, Washington, United States.

Soap Lake is a mineral-rich salt lake in Washington whose waters contain about 23 different minerals arranged in two distinct layers that have remained separate for thousands of years. The upper layer is lighter and fresher, while the deeper layer stays heavy and mineral-concentrated, giving the lake its unusual characteristics.

People in the region recognized the lake's healing properties long before European settlement and visited to treat themselves and their animals. When settlers arrived in the early 1900s, this knowledge became formalized into health resorts that drew patients from across the country.

The lake has been a healing destination for generations, drawing people who believed in the therapeutic power of its waters. This tradition of seeking wellness through the mineral-rich environment continues to shape how visitors experience the place today.

The lake is accessible year-round, but the best time for swimming is from May through September when the water is comfortably warm. The shoreline and shallow areas provide easy access, and the strong buoyancy of the water makes it simple to stay afloat.

The water is so mineral-rich that people float effortlessly on the surface like in the Dead Sea, without needing to actively swim. This natural buoyancy is a rare geological feature found in only a handful of lakes worldwide.
