Rita Blanca National Grassland

Rita Blanca National Grassland spans 92,989 acres across Texas and Oklahoma, featuring shortgrass prairies and varied elevations from 3,700 to 4,700 feet.

The Department of Interior purchased this land during the 1930s through the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act to restore areas affected by the Dust Bowl.

Spanish sheepherders named the area Rita Blanca, meaning Little White River, which later extended to multiple geographic features in the region.

The Forest Service manages the land for multiple purposes, including grazing permits for over 5,000 cattle, camping areas, and hiking trails.

The grassland contains 826 species of vascular plants from 81 families, supporting wildlife like pronghorns, prairie dogs, and predatory birds.
