Lake Constance

Lake Constance stretches across three countries and comprises two connected basins separated by a narrower section. The shoreline touches numerous towns and is framed by rolling hills and distant alpine peaks that become visible on clear days.

People settled along the shores long before Roman times, and later Roman forces controlled key points along the coast. During the medieval period, influential trading towns and monasteries emerged, shaping economic and intellectual exchange between the regions.

Small towns along the shoreline celebrate summer festivals with fireworks and boat parades, drawing families who have attended these gatherings for generations. Wine growing on the slopes remains a living tradition, and visitors can taste local wines directly from producers who tend their vines overlooking the water.

Bicycles can be carried along well-marked paths that circle the entire shoreline and cross between countries. During summer, public swimming areas become accessible, while in winter some sections grow quieter as temperatures drop.

The water flows slowly through the basin as part of the Rhine system and supplies drinking water to several million people. Along certain shoreline spots, remains of prehistoric stilt settlements offer insights into life thousands of years ago.
