Khizi District, Administrative district in northeastern Azerbaijan

Khizi District is an administrative area in northeastern Azerbaijan covering about 1,850 square kilometers. The terrain includes mountains, rivers, forests, and semi-desert zones near the Caspian coast, with multiple waterways such as the Atachay, Jangichay, Kanda, Tugchay, and Dizavarchay supporting local agriculture.

The district received its administrative status on August 30, 1930, during the Soviet era. The region maintained this structure after Azerbaijan declared independence in 1991.

Local Azerbaijani and Tat communities maintain pastoral traditions and regional customs that shape daily life in the district. These practices remain visible in how people use the land and interact with their surroundings.

Multiple rivers flow through the region, providing water and resources for agriculture and daily life. The varied landscapes across mountains, forests, and semi-desert zones mean that planning visits requires knowing which specific areas you want to explore.

The district is home to the Candy Cane Mountains west of Gilazi, where colorful rock formations display vibrant striped patterns across the semi-desert landscape. These striking geological features formed through natural processes and are easy to spot as you travel through the area.
