Baku Museum of Miniature Books, Miniature book museum in the Inner City, Azerbaijan
The Baku Museum of Miniature Books is located in the Inner City and displays thousands of tiny publications from around 64 countries. The collection fills 25 glass display cases organized across 15 different sections.
The museum opened in 2002, established after Zarifa Salahova spent 30 years gathering miniature books. Her dedication brought together this specialized collection in one place.
The collection shows how different cultures found ways to make books small and portable. Visitors encounter works in Russian, German, Georgian, Azerbaijani, Arabic, Turkish, Italian, English, French, and Japanese side by side.
The museum is located in the Inner City and is open from Tuesday through Sunday. Come with comfortable shoes and plan to spend time looking closely at the cases, as many items require careful viewing to appreciate the details.
The museum holds a miniature Quran from Saudi Arabia dating to the 17th century and Japanese books that measure only a few millimeters across. Reading these tiniest works actually requires magnification to see the text.
