Sonargaon Upazila

Sonargaon Upazila is an administrative division in Narayanganj that stretches along the Shitalakshya River and contains both urban and rural settlements. The region sits at just 7 meters above sea level, blending different types of communities within a flat landscape.

From the 13th to 14th century, this region served as the capital of medieval Bengal and functioned as a major trading center and administrative seat. This role made it one of the most important urban centers of its era in the region.

The Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation preserves traditional handicraft techniques through exhibitions of textiles, pottery, and metalwork made by local artisans. Visitors can directly experience how these time-honored skills remain active in the region today.

Visitors can reach Sonargaon by bus from Dhaka's Gulistan terminal, with the journey taking around two hours depending on traffic. Planning this visit early in the day gives you enough time to explore the area comfortably.

The Panam City neighborhood contains numerous colonial-era mansions that blend European and South Asian architectural styles. These buildings display a rare mix of design elements that reflect the layered history of that period.
