Trakia motorway, Controlled-access highway from Sofia to Burgas, Bulgaria.
Trakia motorway is a 360-kilometer controlled-access highway that connects Bulgaria's capital Sofia with Plovdiv and terminates at the Black Sea port of Burgas. The route runs from west to east across the country, linking several major cities and commercial centers.
Construction began in 1973, with the opening of the first 10-kilometer section between Sofia and Novi Han in 1978. Subsequent phases gradually connected additional regions and transformed national transportation infrastructure over several decades.
The motorway takes its name from the ancient region of Thrace, reflecting the historical territory it crosses from western to eastern Bulgaria.
Vehicles require an electronic vignette to use the motorway, with a maximum speed limit of 140 kilometers per hour. Before driving, familiarize yourself with local traffic regulations and obtain the correct vignette for your vehicle type.
The final section between Yambol and Karnobat required special engineering solutions due to waterlogged soil and difficult ground conditions. These challenges made this stretch of road technically demanding to build.
