Smolyan

Smolyan is an administrative province in southern Bulgaria that spans across the Rhodope Mountains and encompasses ten municipalities. The region's landscape is shaped by its mountainous terrain and southern borders.

The region was named after the Smolyani Slavic tribe that settled in the area in earlier times. Until the early 20th century, this territory was under Ottoman rule before it was liberated.

The region is home to various religious communities that coexist in the landscape, with Orthodox churches and mosques reflecting its diverse spiritual heritage. Local villages maintain traditions connected to both Christian and Muslim practices passed down through generations.
