Shipka memorial, Monument in Bulgaria
The Shipka Memorial is a large tower-shaped monument standing on the peak of Shipka Pass in the Balkan Mountains. It can be seen from a great distance and marks the site of some of the most intense fighting in Bulgarian history.
The monument was built to honor those who died at the Battle of Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 to 1878. It was completed in 1934 and has stood ever since as a marker of Bulgaria's break from Ottoman rule.
The monument serves as a place where people come to remember those who fought for independence, and it draws visitors from across the country who pause to reflect on this chapter of history. The site has become a focal point for remembrance and national reflection.
Reaching the top requires climbing a long staircase, so sturdy shoes make the walk much more comfortable. The summit can be cold and windy even in summer, so bringing a layer of clothing is a good idea.
Inside the tower, a museum runs through each floor, so the climb doubles as a walk through exhibits. The bones of soldiers who fell during the battle are kept within the structure, making it both a monument and a tomb.
