Maracá Biological Reserve

Maracá Biological Reserve is a protected forest area in Roraima covering over 100.000 hectares of rainforest with varied ecosystems and river landscapes. The terrain supports diverse wildlife and remains dedicated primarily to research and scientific study.

The reserve was created in 1979 to protect a representative portion of the Amazon ecosystem in the Uraricoera River region. Its establishment represented an important effort to safeguard biodiversity in northern Brazil.

Research teams conduct systematic studies of local species through a network of trails designed by the Roraima regional center of PPBio in 2006.

Access requires prior authorization from environmental authorities and is limited to research and educational purposes. Prospective visitors should contact the relevant authorities in advance to arrange necessary permissions.

The reserve is home to several populations of White-bellied spider monkeys, primates adapted to the specific rainforest conditions. These populations represent an important focus for wildlife protection in the region.
