Journey Behind the Falls, Waterfall attraction at Niagara Falls, Canada
Journey Behind the Falls is a tunnel system that takes visitors underground through bedrock passages to viewing platforms positioned directly behind the cascading water. The galleries provide an up-close look at the force and movement of the water as it continuously descends.
The tunnel system was built in 1892 by engineers who blasted and carved passages directly through solid rock beneath the falls. This work made it possible for ordinary visitors to experience the cascade from a perspective that was previously impossible.
The site connects visitors to the raw power of nature that has shaped this region for generations, allowing people to feel their smallness before this force. Standing behind the falls lets you experience what drew people here centuries ago.
Access is through a visitor center, and you should expect wet conditions, especially in the tunnels near the water itself. Waterproof ponchos are provided, and you should wear shoes with good grip since the tunnel floors are frequently wet.
The two viewing portals sit roughly one-third of the way behind the falling water, offering a rare view looking out through the churning stream. From there you can see the actual walls of the cascade from the inside, something few visitors ever witness.
