Luna Island

Luna Island sits between American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls in Niagara Falls, New York, creating a narrow viewing platform in the river. White cedar trees grow on its southern end while shrubs cover the northern section, and walkways connect it to neighboring Goat Island.

The island was originally known as Prospect Island but received its current name in the 1800s because of lunar rainbows visible during full moon nights. In 1969, major anti-erosion work was completed when water flow was temporarily halted to remove loose rocks and strengthen the island's foundation.

The island functions as a viewing point between two major waterfalls, letting visitors experience how the water moves and falls from different angles. People gather here to see the power of the falls up close from a perspective they cannot get elsewhere.

Visitors can reach the island by walking across pedestrian bridges from Goat Island to cross over the rapids and access various viewing platforms. Wear sturdy shoes since the walkways and platforms can become slippery when wet from the mist and spray.

The island's name comes from rare lunar rainbows that appear over the falls on clear full moon nights, casting a silvery glow across the water. This phenomenon is hard to witness, but when it occurs, it creates an otherworldly sight that few visitors ever experience.
