Riptide, Spinning pendulum ride at Canada's Wonderland, Ontario, Canada.
Riptide is a swinging pendulum ride at Canada's Wonderland, a large amusement park in Vaughan, Ontario, where two gondolas are attached to mechanical arms that rise, fall, and rotate simultaneously. Each gondola holds a row of riders seated side by side and facing outward, creating a combined motion of swinging and spinning.
The ride opened in August 2000 under the name Cliffhanger, making it one of the newer additions to the park at the time. After Cedar Fair took over the park in 2007, the name was changed to Riptide.
Riptide sits in the Medieval Faire section of the park, an area themed around a medieval fair setting. This corner of the park draws families and groups who tend to spend a good part of their day moving between rides clustered nearby.
There is both a minimum and maximum height requirement for this ride, so it is worth checking before joining the queue. The motion combines spinning and swinging at the same time, which can be intense, so riders who are sensitive to strong movement should keep that in mind.
As the gondolas swing overhead, water fountains shoot up from the ground directly below them. This water effect catches many first-time visitors off guard, since it is not immediately obvious from the queue.
