Matupi Cave, Archaeological cave in Mount Hoyo massif, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Matupi Cave is a limestone cave within the Mount Hoyo massif located in the Ituri Rainforest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The natural cavity measures approximately 7 meters in height, 8 meters in depth, and 5 meters in width.
The site formed through natural geological processes in a limestone mountain range and was later inhabited by early humans. Systematic investigations between 1973 and 1974 uncovered over 8000 objects from different periods.
The site bears the name of a local mountain formation and tells of human habitation spanning many millennia. The artifacts show that people lived here over extended periods and left behind their tools and artistic creations.
Access to the cave is restricted and requires authorization and guidance from local authorities. The location functions as an active research site, so advance coordination is essential.
The cave preserves layers spanning 40000 years that show how the environment changed over time. Pollen and animal bones from different periods allow researchers to piece together a picture of early life in this region.
