Shalu Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Samzhubzê District, China

The Shalu Monastery contains multiple buildings that merge traditional Han Chinese and Tibetan architectural elements within its stone and wood structures.

Founded in 1087, this Buddhist learning center developed into a major educational institution during the rise of the Sakya tradition in Tibet.

The monastery walls display extensive collections of Buddhist murals that represent the artistic techniques and religious symbolism of medieval Tibet.

Visitors can reach the monastery by taking a two-hour drive south from Shigatse, with guided tours available throughout the main temple complex.

The monastery houses specific training areas where monks historically practiced specialized meditation techniques focusing on physical and mental development.
