Jonang Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Shigatse, China.

Jonang Monastery sits on elevated terrain surrounded by mountain ranges, displaying traditional white walls with red trim and multiple prayer halls spread across its grounds. The buildings follow Tibetan architectural styles and stand prominently within the landscape.

Founded in 1230, this monastery became an important center for Buddhist teachings and meditation practices. Its special focus on Kalachakra tantra teachings established it as a significant place of learning.

This monastery serves as a center where monks engage in daily prayers and scriptural study that shape the rhythm of monastic life. The teaching traditions practiced here have influenced Buddhist schools across the Tibetan plateau.

A permit is required to visit, which should be arranged before arriving at the location. The best time to visit falls between May and October when the weather is most favorable.

The monastery preserves a distinct meditation method and philosophical approach called Shentong, which differs fundamentally from other Buddhist schools in the highland region. This teaching tradition remains deeply rooted in daily practice and continues through generations of monks.
