Chomo Lonzo, Mountain summit in Shigatse, China
Chomo Lonzo is a mountain peak in the Mahalangur Himalayas with three distinct summits, with the main peak reaching approximately 7,800 meters. The formation displays several sharp ridges and edges visible from different directions.
The mountain was first climbed in 1954 by French mountaineers Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray, who used the southwest ridge route. This ascent marked a key milestone in exploring this Himalayan region.
The name Chomo Lonzo comes from Tibetan and means goddess of the bird, as the mountain's shape resembles a bird with spread wings when viewed from the east.
Climbers typically choose the months of April through June and September through November for climbing attempts, when weather conditions are more favorable. During these periods, climbers have the best visibility and more stable snow and ice conditions.
The peaks of this mountain sit unusually close together and are joined by very narrow ridges. This tight connection between the summits makes climbing on this mountain somewhat distinctive compared to more isolated Himalayan peaks.
