Tongren, City in northeastern Guizhou Province, China
Tongren is a city in the northeastern part of Guizhou Province in China, set among the Wuling Mountains near the borders of Hunan and Chongqing. It is organized into two main urban districts and several counties and autonomous areas, including Jiangkou, Sinan, and Yanhe.
Tongren has roots going back more than 3,000 years, as shown by the remains of old city walls, gates, and water channels found across the area. Over time it grew into a key administrative and transit point in eastern Guizhou, linking the province to neighboring Hunan and Chongqing.
The name Tongren comes from an old story in which someone found three bronze figures underwater, and the city took its name from that discovery. Today, the city is home to Miao, Dong, and Tujia communities whose festivals, music, and hand-sewn clothing are still part of daily and ceremonial life.
Tongren can be reached by plane or fast train, with local buses and taxis available from both arrival points to get into the city. The weather can shift quickly, especially near the mountains, so packing a light jacket and an umbrella makes moving around much easier.
On nearby Fanjing Mountain, a sacred Buddhist site and UNESCO World Heritage site, a rainbow-like halo of seven colors sometimes appears against the clouds before 9 in the morning or after 4 in the afternoon. This optical effect is tied to specific light and mist conditions and is not guaranteed on any given visit.
