Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County

The administrative region stretches across 24,682 square kilometers of mountainous terrain at an elevation of 3,094 meters in western Xinjiang Province.

The area transformed from a key Silk Road trading post known as Puli during the Han Dynasty to an official autonomous county in 1954.

Mountain Tajiks constitute the majority of the population, maintaining their traditional practices of sheep herding and establishing the only Tajik autonomous territory in China.

The Karakoram Highway connects the county to neighboring regions, with a new airport under construction to enhance transportation accessibility.

The county sits at the intersection of four mountain ranges: Kunlun, Karakoram, Hindukush, and Tian Shan, bordering Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and India.
