Donghua University, university
Donghua University is a major higher education institution in Shanghai with two main campuses, one in the city center on Yan'an Road and another in Songjiang. The campuses feature libraries, sports fields, laboratory facilities, and a mix of modern and historic buildings that reflect different periods of institutional growth.
The institution was founded in 1912 as Nantong College and evolved through several name changes before becoming Donghua University in 1999. It was designated a key national university by the government in 1960 and has since operated directly under the Ministry of Education.
The university takes its name from a historic textile tradition and this connection remains visible in how the institution displays fashion and design work across its campus. Visitors can see students engaged with the Shanghai fashion calendar and observe how the place serves as a meeting point for creative practitioners from China and abroad.
Both campuses are easily accessible by public transport and feature clear signage and open spaces for sitting. Note that certain laboratory spaces and academic buildings may have restricted access, so it is advisable to check at an entrance desk before exploring restricted areas.
The university became one of the first in China to admit international students in 1954 and has hosted the International Fashion Forum since 1995 as part of Shanghai's major fashion culture festival. Today it attracts students from roughly 136 countries, making it a pioneer in global higher education across the nation.
