Zhabei District, Former administrative district in northern Shanghai, China.
Zhabei is a former district in northern Shanghai that was merged with the neighboring Jing'an District in 2015. The area covers Shanghai Railway Station as well as parks and performance venues scattered across the neighborhood.
The area was established as an independent district in 1945 and remained so for seven decades. In 2015, authorities merged Zhabei with Jing'an, redrawing the administrative boundaries of northern Shanghai in one move.
Shanghai Railway Station, which sits at the heart of this former district, draws commuters and travelers from across the country every day. Around it, small markets and local restaurants have grown up to serve the steady flow of people passing through.
The area is easy to reach by metro, with Shanghai Railway Station serving as the main reference point for orientation. From there, most spots in the neighborhood are reachable on foot or with a short ride.
A former industrial zone within the district was turned into Shanghai Multimedia Valley, now home to technology and media companies. The change happened within a few years and is still visible as you walk through the area today.
