Mêdog County, Administrative division in Nyingchi, Tibet, China
Mêdog County is an administrative division in Nyingchi's mountainous landscape, spreading across steep slopes and deep valleys. The terrain is defined by the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, whose dramatic walls and narrow passages shape the entire area.
The area was originally part of the Pomi kingdom before becoming an administrative county in 1986. This change meant separation from Lhasa's control and integration into the Nyingchi region.
The people here speak Tshangla as their main language and maintain distinct ways of life in this remote setting. Different ethnic communities share the land and create a blend of local customs visible in daily activities.
The only road connection was completed in 2013, offering the first permanent access without foot travel. Visitors should prepare for extreme weather and limited services, as the remote location remains challenging to reach.
The area receives extraordinary rainfall that sustains subtropical vegetation at high altitude, which is unusual for such elevations. This makes the natural surroundings distinctly different from drier regions nearby.
