Presidential Palace of Nanjing, Historical palace and modern history museum at Changjiang Road in Nanjing, China.
The Presidential Palace of Nanjing is a historic government compound on Changjiang Road that now functions as a museum of modern Chinese history. The grounds include several pavilions, courtyards, and a classical garden with ponds and covered walkways that show different architectural styles from different eras.
The compound served as residence for the Taiping Heavenly Palace in the 19th century and later became the seat of government during the Republic of China. After 1949 the complex transformed into a history museum documenting the political changes of the 20th century.
The site preserves the name Presidential Palace even though it now serves as a public museum where visitors walk through rooms that once held government meetings and decisions. The ceremonial hall retains its formal character with rows of wooden chairs facing a raised platform where officials once addressed the nation.
Entry requires a security check at the main gate and visitors can explore the entire compound on foot with most people spending about two to three hours. Signage is in Chinese and English and audio guides are available at the entrance.
The compound houses an underground tunnel built during the republican era as an escape route for officials. The tunnel system connects several buildings and is now open to visitors as part of the museum tour.
