Xu Garden

Xu Garden is a park in Nanjing featuring a central lake shaped like a boat, traditional pavilions, and detailed wooden elements throughout its structures. Multiple bridges connect different sections, and the entire layout reflects principles of classical Chinese garden design and spatial arrangement.

Built originally during the Ming Dynasty as a prince's residence garden, the site later transformed into a government office during the founding period of the modern republic. This shift in purpose reflects major political changes that shaped the region.

The central hall references classical poetry through its name, and two ancient iron cauldrons remain visible as tangible connections to the past. Visitors naturally gather in these spaces to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, reflecting how the garden continues to serve as a place for quiet reflection.

The garden provides multiple viewpoints for observing the traditional layout and design, with pathways and bridges throughout the grounds for exploring at a leisurely pace. Comfortable walking shoes help when spending time strolling through the different sections and outdoor areas.

The grounds contain several distinctively named bridges, each with its own architectural character and visual appeal for visitors to discover while walking around. A marble boat structure within the park serves as a replica of a famous feature from an imperial garden elsewhere in China.
