Jiming Temple, Buddhist temple near Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing, China
Jiming Temple is a Buddhist complex near Xuanwu Lake that features a seven-story pagoda, the Guanyin Hall, Huomeng Building, and Medicine Buddha Pagoda arranged across the grounds. The structures spread across the site to form different functional areas within the overall temple complex.
It was founded in 527 during the Liang dynasty and underwent multiple reconstructions, with the current structure dating from 1387 during the Ming dynasty. These rebuildings show how the temple was preserved and renewed through different historical periods.
The temple draws visitors during Lunar New Year when traditional Buddhist ceremonies take place, with people offering incense in all four directions as part of their spiritual practice. These rituals connect the site to the spiritual habits of the local community.
Visitors can explore the complex daily and should wear comfortable shoes since touring the various buildings and climbing stairs through different structures is required. The best time to visit is early morning or on weekdays when fewer people are on site.
On the temple grounds stands a well called Rouge Well, connected to a legend about an emperor and his concubine who allegedly hid there from enemies. This story adds cultural and legendary significance to the site.
