Shennongjia

Shennongjia covers 3,253 square kilometers of mountains and forests, reaching elevations from 398 meters at Shizhu River to 3,105 meters at Shennongding Peak.

The district, established in 1970 from areas of adjacent counties, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 due to its natural biodiversity.

The name derives from Shennong, a Chinese mythological figure who discovered agriculture and traditional medicine through testing herbs in these mountains.

Three central towns provide access to the reserve: Muyu houses the tourist center, while Hongping features an airport connecting to major Chinese cities.

The forest district contains white-colored variations of local wildlife, including bears, monkeys, deer, squirrels, snakes, crows, and toads.
