Zixiao Palace, Taoist temple in Danjiangkou, China.
Zixiao Palace is a Taoist temple built on a hillside in the Wudang Mountains near Danjiangkou, Hubei. It is made up of several halls arranged across different levels of the slope, connected by stone staircases and open courtyards.
Zixiao Palace was built during the Ming dynasty, when Emperor Yongle ordered large-scale construction across the Wudang Mountains. The site was expanded and restored in later periods, and it stands today as one of the best-preserved temple groups in the range.
The temple is an active place of worship where visitors can watch people burning incense and praying at decorated altars. During festivals, the courtyards fill with pilgrims who come from across China to perform Taoist rituals.
Wear sturdy shoes, as reaching the different halls involves climbing uneven stone staircases up the hillside. Going early in the day gives you better light and more space to move around the courtyards and paths.
The wooden structures across the complex are painted with colored patterns that also act as a coating to slow the decay of the wood. This method has been used here for centuries and some of the original painted surfaces are still intact today.
