Zhongjie, Shopping street in Shenyang, China.
Zhongjie is a shopping street around 1500 meters long in central Shenyang with numerous retail stores, international brands, and department stores. The entire zone is reserved for pedestrian traffic and connects different shopping levels and facilities into one continuous space.
This commercial area was established as Siping Street during the Qing Dynasty, making it the city's oldest shopping district. Over several centuries it has continuously evolved as a trading hub and adapted to modern demands.
The street shows how local residents mix traditional shopping habits with modern retail, moving between stalls of everyday goods and contemporary stores. You notice families and shoppers moving through the same paths their grandparents may have used generations ago.
The street is easy to reach through two metro stations on Line 1: Zhongjie Station and Dongzhongjie Station connect the area to major transportation hubs. Visitors can explore comfortably on foot since all facilities are within walking distance and everything is flat and wide.
Zhongjie became the first officially designated pedestrian shopping zone in China in 1997 and set the model for commercial street development in other cities. The project proved that car-free shopping areas could work in China and inspired a nationwide movement.
