Litang Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Litang County, China
The Ganden Thubchen Choekhorling monastery complex stands at 4014 meters elevation, encompassing several religious buildings against a backdrop of mountain peaks in Sichuan.
The Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso established this religious center in 1580, converting it from a Bon worship site to a Gelug Buddhist institution.
The monastery holds chambers containing religious artifacts, including a preserved bedroom associated with the Seventh Dalai Lama who was born in this region.
Visitors reach the monastery through a two-day bus journey from Chengdu along the Chengdu-Lhasa Highway, traversing through high-altitude mountain passages.
The monastery grounds witness the annual Litang Horse Racing Festival in August, where local riders demonstrate traditional equestrian skills on the surrounding grasslands.
