Litang Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Litang County, China

Ganden Thubchen Choekhorling is a monastery complex at 4,014 meters elevation with several religious buildings set against mountain peaks. The site features traditional Tibetan Buddhist architecture spread across extensive grounds in Sichuan.

The Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso founded this site in 1580, converting a Bon worship location into a Gelug Buddhist institution. This transformation marked a major religious shift in the local spiritual landscape.

The monastery is connected to the birthplace of the Seventh Dalai Lama and preserves personal objects from that period. The site holds deep spiritual meaning for local people and serves as a center for Buddhist practice in the region.

The site sits at high elevation, so visitors should prepare for thin air and allow time for acclimatization. The location is accessible if you follow posted opening hours and observe local guidelines.

Each August, the Litang Horse Racing Festival takes place on surrounding grasslands where local riders display traditional horsemanship skills. This event links nomadic traditions with the region's spiritual life.
