Rongme Ngatra, Mountain summit in Dêgê County, China
Rongme Ngatra is a mountain summit in the Chola Mountains of western Sichuan, rising to approximately 6,100 meters elevation. Substantial glaciers cover its northern and eastern slopes above the waters of Lake Yihun Lhatso.
The first recorded ascent took place in 1988, marking an important moment in the exploration of this high mountain range. Since then, the peak has become known as the highest summit in the Chola Mountains of the region.
The peak holds particular meaning in the Kham region where Tibetan and Chinese communities each use their own names for the mountain. Local people and pilgrims recognize it as an important landmark in the high plateau landscape.
Access is typically arranged through the town of Manigango, where climbers can prepare for the expedition. Specialized mountaineering equipment and proper acclimatization periods are essential due to the extreme altitude and challenging conditions.
The north glacier extends unusually low, descending to around 4,100 meters and creating a striking natural boundary where ice meets the waters of Lake Yihun Lhatso below. This geological feature makes the mountain distinctive within the broader high plateau landscape.
